Josh Goebel came on board as the General Manager in September 2011. He got his start in the business when he began working at a country club, near Kalamazoo, as a dishwasher at the age of 14. He moved up through the kitchen starting with salads and pastries eventually moving on to broil and sauté stations. He quickly began to appreciate great food and the methodology behind preparing wonderful entrees. When Josh turned 19, desiring to broaden his knowledge of the business, he ventured into the front of the house. Starting as a bus boy and eventually moving up to bartending and serving, he discovered that he thoroughly enjoyed the interaction with customers. At that point he felt he had found his niche in the business. After graduating high school he enrolled at Western Michigan University to pursue his other passion, writing. Josh studied in the Secondary Education program majoring in English in hopes to someday become a high school English teacher. However, after his student teaching experience he soon realized teaching was not for him. During his break after college he began working at an upscale Italian restaurant in a suburb of Kalamazoo, and a four diamond rated hotel downtown. His experience at these locations exposed him to the very high service standards he uses today.

During that time Josh found a job as the Food & Beverage Director at a country club in Harbor Springs. After five years of managing at Birchwood, he moved to Traverse City after friends’ recommendations. They told him about all the great restaurants in the area, and he felt it was well worth a try. After coming on board at The Bay Leaf, he realized how much he missed being surrounded by people so passionate about food. He believes strongly in the ideology of this restaurant and looks forward to ongoing success. Josh feels he is working with the best culinary and service staff in the area, and every day is ongoing education for him. He is proud to be a part of such an eclectic experience, and is delighted to offer his knowledge and twenty years of experience to the BayLeaf.
