Dan Kelly opened The Bay Leaf in December of 2010 with General Manager Dennis Fitzpatrick and Executive Chef Adam McMarlin. An experienced and skilled restaurateur and executive chef, Dan is the owner of The Bay Leaf. 

Dan was born and raised in Traverse City, Michigan, and held his first job at a local restaurant named Bill’s Dills when he was in high school. Though he worked as the dishwasher, it was this job that ignited his passion for the kitchen and the restaurant industry. After earning his degree in hotel and restaurant management from Michigan State, Dan held various positions putting his education to use in California, Arizona and Colorado before returning home to Traverse City to open his own restaurant. 

At the young age of twenty-six, Dan, along with his wife Jan, bought the building at 120 Park Street and transformed it into the successful and well-known DJ Kelly’s as owner and executive chef. For years Dan did backdoor catering through DJ Kelly’s, and after fourteen years of owning his restaurant, switched over to catering full-time with his business Catering By Kelly’s, which he still operates today.

This is the first time Dan has owned a restaurant in his building since he closed DJ Kelly’s in 2000, and it is with expertise as a restaurateur, love for his hometown and the local community, and faith in this newest venture, that he opens The Bay Leaf.
